|Departing from UPEI at 2 pm our journey begins at Jewell Dale Farm this third generation farm owned and operated by the Jewell Family. The farm consists of 220 head of dairy cattle and farms roughly 1000 acres, both owned and rented. The farm currently milks 120 cows in a freestall barn constructed in 2009. The barn was designed for optimal health and comfort of the cows. The majority of feed for the herd is produced on the farm. The farm strives for high production while maintaining high milk quality. The farm was recognized last year by a national milk recording agency for having the top management index for dairy herds in Prince Edward Island.
This dairy farm has focused on improving cow comfort for their herd. They are currently in the process of renovating and expanding to increase space for lame/sick cows (larger hospital pen), decrease handling stress (addition of self-locking head-gates) and improve air quality (addition of ceiling fans). The new expansion includes an area for dry cows to help decrease overstocking and minimize the number of moves and group changes, to help decrease stress during this important production stage. During the tour, the farm manager and the herd veterinarian will be present to explain the daily management and herd health protocols that take place. One of the family members is a graduate student at UPEI and will be available to speak about her work, which focuses on welfare aspects of the dairy industry such as integument lesions and lameness. The tour will also include the calf facility, where calves are now being housed in small groups, as opposed to traditional individual housing. Guests will be provided with samples of dairy products from the local dairy processor Amalgamated Dairies Limited (ADL). ADL is well known for its cheese, which has won many awards.
